German FM has rejected "urgent" defense request
(MENAFN) According to reports, Germany's Federal Ministry of Finance has denied Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht's urgent request for additional funds to address the country's military's significant ammunition shortage.
In a letter obtained by the German Press Agency (DPA), Finance State Secretary Steffen Saebisch stated that munitions makers appeared to have a "different understanding" of the reason of the ammunition issue.
The letter from the finance ministry comes after the SPD's Lambrecht allegedly wrote to her coalition partner, FDP Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner, asking extra funding.
While Lambrecht faulted the ammo shortage on a lack of funding and demanded more money "immediately in a significant amount," Saebisch said industry representatives believed the slow availability of equipment and ammunition was due to the defense ministry's "complicated, sometimes non-transparent and inconsistent" ordering processes.
However, the finance ministry has committed to assisting the military ministry in "enhancing their planning processes."
For example, Saebisch advised Lambrecht to hold conversations with the armaments sector and participate in a "sufficiently tangible exchange of information" with manufacturers, as well as "realistic and ongoing monitoring" of financial requirements.
